Free Info – Think Your IRS Matter Is Handled – Killer IRS
The secrets are already listed on the topic pages of the site or under the “free advice” tab.
The secret here is that often people limit themselves thinking that there are only a few solutions. and thus the matter must be handled because the IRS person on the phone said it was. I have often told people that when you owe money to the IRS you have few choices. They are…
- Pay the tax.
- Amend the return to lower the liability and then pay the tax.
- File an offer in compromise to try to pay less.
- File a request for penalty removal.
- Enter into a payment plan to pay over time.
The truth is that there are several options within the scope of these options. For example there are variations on payment plans that the IRS normally doesn’t explain to people. If done timely, you can appeal a decision made by an auditor or other IRS employee causing additional tax. There are ways to present information that will lower the monthly payment you have to make. It is essential to know what binds the IRS and you into a payment plan and what will cause it to default. It’s dangerous to read yahoo answers and other forums where people say “Don’t hire a tax representation firm. I called the IRS myself and they set up a payment plan.” I say “How do you know you didn’t overpay? How do you know the plan was approved? How do you know you won’t break the agreement, causing a wage or bank levy?”. A week doesn’t go by where we are not explaining to people why their agreement (if they really had one) was broken.
Checking the record of account to see if any changes to your account were made is essential. Often phone calls are not saved on the IRS’s system. IRS employees may enter information that is different then what you agreed to. Many times I was told by ACS that things like a lien will not be filed, only to find out that they never entered the information. Shortly thereafter a lien was filed.
