Bay City’s History
Bay City was established in 1894 by a Colorado mining millionaire, David Swickheimer. It was formed in partnership with N. M. Vogelsang, G. M. Magill and Nicholas King. The community was named Bay City because of its location on the Bay Prairie. Before construction began, Bay City was a tent city. The Cane Belt Railroad reached the city in 1901. Over the years, Bay City has become a thriving community and the center of the largest rice-producing area in the nation.
