Belton’s History
Belton was originally founded in 1850 as the county seat for Bell County. Within ten years, the region had a school, courthouse, hotel, church, saloon, stores and other businesses. The courthouse that stands in the town today was built in 1886. The Baylor Female College, later renamed the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas.
