Milam County’s History
In the 1820s, Milam County was organized as the “Municipality of Milam” covering roughly one sixth of the entire state of Texas. In the 1850’s and 1860’s, Milam County was subdivided to form several other Texas Counties. Present day Milam County includes portions of the Brazos, San Gabriel, Brushy Creek and Little Rivers within 1,017 square miles of the Blackland Prairie and Post Oak Savannah regions of Texas. Towns in present day Milam County include: San Gabriel, Thorndale, Rockdale, Milano, Gause, Burlington, Cameron (county seat) and Davilla.
